Anchored in Faith: How to Start a Life-Changing Daily Faith Practice
Life as a Catholic mom can often feel overwhelming. Between family responsibilities, work, and the endless list of tasks, making time for faith can seem daunting. However, integrating a daily faith practice is not only possible but can also become a transformative part of your life. Here, I’ll share the steps that have helped me strengthen my relationship with God and find deeper peace, joy, and purpose.
Step 1: Schedule Your Faith Practice as a Daily Appointment with God
Establishing a consistent time to connect with God each day is the foundation of a lasting faith routine. Mornings work well because they set a peaceful tone, but choose a time that aligns with your schedule and consider it a non-negotiable "appointment with God." Jesus reminded us in Matthew 6:33, "Seek first the kingdom of God," emphasizing that prioritizing faith can bring blessings into every aspect of life.
Actionable Tip: Set an alarm for your daily faith practice and commit to staying off social media until after you’ve dedicated time to God. Starting your day focused on Him will bring peace, clarity, and perspective.
Step 2: Practice Gratitude Every Morning
Begin each day by journaling three things you’re grateful for. Reflecting on both big and small blessings is an impactful way to shift your focus from life’s challenges to its blessings. Even if it’s a rough day, gratitude can change your perspective. In 1 Thessalonians 5:18, we’re reminded to “give thanks in all circumstances,” highlighting that gratitude draws us closer to God’s will.
Actionable Tip: Make a habit of gratitude journaling, jotting down even small blessings like a quiet morning or time with loved ones. This simple practice shifts your focus, inviting more peace and positivity into your day.
Step 3: Engage with Devotionals to Deepen Your Faith
Devotionals can add depth to your faith journey by offering guidance and reflections. Start with one or two devotionals that speak to you, such as Jesus Calling by Sarah Young, or The Word Among Us, a Catholic magazine aligning with the liturgical calendar. Each devotional gives daily Scripture passages to reflect upon, grounding you in God’s Word and connecting you to the global Catholic community.
Actionable Tip: Choose devotionals that resonate with you. If you prefer digital resources, consider the YouVersion Bible app, which has topic-specific plans and allows you to read devotionals with friends for added connection and accountability.
Step 4: Memorize Scripture to Arm Yourself with God’s Word
Memorizing Scripture is like equipping yourself with a spiritual toolkit. Scripture provides encouragement, direction, and reassurance when you face challenges. Whether you’re managing stress, parenting, or pursuing big dreams, memorized verses can bring you strength.
Actionable Tip: Select a memory verse that speaks to your current season. Write it down daily in your journal or use an app to make memorization fun. Psalm 119:11 is a great one to start with: “I have stored up your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”
Step 5: Pray Boldly and Intentionally
Prayer is the most powerful way to deepen your relationship with God. Make a list of specific prayers and dreams you have, whether big or small. Praying boldly, as Mark Batterson suggests in The Circle Maker, honors God by showing trust in His power and generosity. Philippians 4:6 encourages us: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
Actionable Tip: Dedicate a page in your journal for each specific prayer. Detail every aspect of your request, thank God as if it’s already happened, and pray over it regularly. Writing prayers allows you to return to them and witness how God responds.
Embracing Faith in Everyday Life
Integrating a daily faith practice doesn’t mean you need hours to spare; even 10 to 15 minutes of dedicated time can make a significant difference. By setting aside intentional time for faith, practicing gratitude, engaging with devotionals, memorizing Scripture, and praying with boldness, you’ll find greater peace, resilience, and purpose each day.
Let’s make this journey together. Step by step, we’ll grow in faith, deepen our relationship with God, and find His purpose in our lives. Remember, your daily faith practice isn’t just another task—it’s the anchor that will bring peace and transformation into your life.
