How to Hear God's Voice: 4 Ways to Recognize When He Speaks
Have you ever wondered if God is speaking to you? Maybe you’ve prayed and heard nothing but silence. Or perhaps you’ve assumed that hearing from God is reserved for super-spiritual people. If you’re struggling to recognize His voice, you’re not alone.
A Lifeway Research study found that only 20% of Christians say they regularly hear God speak, while 50% admit they struggle to recognize His voice in their daily lives. However, a staggering 82% express a deep desire to hear Him more clearly.
The good news? God is speaking. The real question is—are we listening?
My Personal Story: When God Gave Me a Clear Sign
Back in 2017, my word of the year was change. My husband was interviewing for a job in Washington, D.C., and we were ready to move closer to family. We agreed that if he got the job, we’d go, and if not, we’d accept it as God’s plan to stay put in Glens Falls, New York.
Well—spoiler alert—he didn’t get the job. I was crushed. I wanted to be near my family, especially since our boys were little and my husband had been sick. Sometimes, you just need your mom.
Still feeling emotional, I distracted myself by looking at houses on Zillow. That’s when I saw it—the perfect Victorian home, at an unbelievably low price. For the first time, a house I loved was actually within our budget.
Before heading to Mass, I emailed the real estate agent to request a showing. At church, I prayed: God, I trust You. But if this house isn’t part of Your plan, please give me a clear sign.
When we got home, I checked my email. The agent told me the seller had just taken the house off the market that very morning—while I was at church. There was my answer.
Two years later, God led us to our true dream home in an even better location. His timing was perfect, and His plan was greater than mine.
How Does God Speak to Us? 4 Key Ways to Recognize His Voice
God speaks in many ways. You may not hear an audible voice, but that doesn’t mean He’s silent. Here are some of the primary ways He communicates with us:
1. Through Scripture
“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” — John 10:27
The Bible isn’t just an old book—it’s the living Word of God. Have you ever seen the same verse pop up multiple times in different places? That’s not a coincidence. It’s God trying to get your attention.
I experience this all the time. During my morning quiet time with coffee in hand, I’ll read my devotionals, and—boom!—the same scripture appears in two different places. When this happens, I pause, write it down, and ask: God, what are You trying to tell me?
In my Anchored with Purpose Faith Journal, one of the daily prompts is What is God telling me today? I encourage you to write down what He’s showing you—especially if He keeps repeating it.
2. Through Others
God often speaks through mentors, pastors, friends, and even strangers. Have you ever had someone say exactly what you needed to hear at the right moment? That’s not luck—it’s divine intervention.
This can happen through a trusted friend, a Homily at church, or even a casual conversation. Pay attention to those moments when someone’s words hit home in a way that feels deeper than normal.
3. Through Circumstances
Doors opening or closing can be God’s way of guiding you. What feels like a setback may actually be a divine redirect.
I thought Jeff not getting that job was a setback, but God had something far greater planned for us. When we finally moved, our new home was in a neighborhood full of Catholic families from our parish—many of whom played a huge role in my deeper faith journey.
“In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” — Proverbs 3:6
If a door closes, trust that God is leading you to something better.
4. Through the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit gives us a sense of peace when we’re aligned with God’s will and a sense of unease when we’re not.
Have you ever felt chills or a deep gut feeling about something? That’s often God’s way of confirming or warning you. When I get that overwhelming peace, I know I’m on the right path. When I feel that sinking feeling in my stomach, I know I need to step back and pray.
How Can You Know It’s Really God Speaking?
With so many voices—our own thoughts, society, even the enemy—how do we discern God’s voice? Here are three practical ways:
Silence & Stillness – Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still and know that I am God.” We live in a noisy world. If we want to hear God, we need to slow down, turn off distractions, and create space for Him to speak.
Consistency with Scripture – God will never contradict His Word. If what you’re sensing aligns with the Bible, that’s a strong confirmation.
Peace & Confirmation – If God is leading you, there will be peace, even if the path is uncertain. If there’s confusion or doubt, pause and pray for clarity.
Final Encouragement: God is Speaking to You
Hearing God’s voice isn’t just for pastors, nuns, or “super spiritual” people. It’s for you. God wants a personal relationship with you, and He is always speaking—you just need to listen.
Start today. Open your Bible, sit in silence, pay attention to repeated messages, and ask God to reveal Himself to you.
